My dad is not eating! Please help. 1 Month, 1 Week ago
Hey guys.

My dad has Ph+ ALL. Today he underwent a stem cell transplant, so obviously he is feeling weak and a little emotional. So far he has handling it well, but something that is upsetting him is the hospital food.
My dad absolutely loves food - no matter how bad of a day he has, a good meal never fails to put him in a good mood. So, having spent the last week in hospital, and having at least 4 more weeks to go, he's not very happy. I was with him for dinner the other night, and the food was just awful - dry, fatty steak, 'tomato' soup that smelled and tasted like vomit, and undercooked pumpkin. It has reached the point that he just refuses to eat it.

He's receiving extra nutrition from a drip (forgot the proper name for it ), but I am just so concerned about the emotional impact. I really want to bring in some food/snacks for him, but I just can't think of anything! He is on a low-bacteria diet, which cuts out a lot of his favourite foods, and no cooked food is allowed from outside the hospital (a steak, for instance).
We bring him some cola and lemonade, packets of chips and chocolate. We brought him tuna when he was last in hospital, but he says that he is sick of it now.

So, does anyone have any idea of foods I can bring my dad?

Thank you!

My 49-year-old daddy was diagnosed with +Ph ALL in early March 2010.

Cheesy puff

maybe you need to make contact with the on call nutrionalist or dietician.

Food is very important for recovery and there are times where you are suseptable to the wrong food. He may be nutropenic and the food served up is usually overcooked?to ensure no bacteria.

Most hospitals should have access to this info, just ask the nurses for assistance and the dieticians ph number or make an appt for them to visit him and be there to help him make his decision.

You also need to accept that some chemo has an effect on taste buds and makes the food taste worse.

Hi Cheezy! Sorry but I have just found your post.
I had a stem Cell transplant just over two years ago at age 67 and contracted MRSA around the same time. I went right off my food too. I questioned the type of food that was given to us in the LB diet, all I ever ate was toast and Vegemite or toast and jam for breakfast. The meals for the rest of the day went untouched, apart from some fruit and icecream.
I was confined to a sterile room for four weeks and lost 18 kilos in that time - which I have now put back!
I know that some hospitals especially overseas are minimising the LB diet and sending people home earlier, as long as they are very careful about their loss of immunity. Even today 27 months later my imunoglobulin level is 1.7 when the normal range is between 6.0 and 17.
All this means is much more hand washing and no crowded theatres or doctors rooms, especially this time of year.
Try to talk to his Hemetologist about his diet and ask dad what he would like.
My wife made me a sign in a large picture frame
'Every Day in Every Way, I'm Getting Better and Better'.
Wish him all the best from all of us - Get him a LIVESTRONG bracelet, I've worn mine since day one.
